NYC Mission Trip 2014

makeover day

I went on my first mission trip, ya’ll!!

I went to New York City for the first time EVER and got to experience what God’s love is all about. We fed the homeless and spent an entire day at a Women’s Shelter giving manicures/pedicures, doing makeup, doing hair, giving away food, clothing, and gift bags. We basically loved up on these women who have not been loved on in FAR TOO LONG.

The experience was life changing. That being said, I think the most incredible and moving part of my journey was getting to be around so many strong women of faith. We were in small rooms with bunk beds and I really loved all of my roommates (below) and, really, all of the ladies on the trip. They have so much love in their hearts, it was such a blessing to be surrounded by so many incredible women, building each other up!

We also had a day and some afternoons to explore the city, so I took my trusty best pal Emily & we explored the city!!

We even made it a priority to visit Books of Wonder, an incredible children’s book store in the city. Not only was it a dream to wander around in there and spend WAY too much on books, but the staff was incredibly knowledgeable and great to talk to!

Overall, the trip was a success. I had a hard time on Friday night… we were bringing food, water, and toiletry items to the homeless. They were staying in a shopping plaza to stay out of the rain until 11:30 when the plaza would closed. I brought some water to a few older homeless women and got scolded by a security officer… it was a private building and we weren’t allowed to give them anything inside the building. I know everyone has different opinions, but to me… it wasn’t right. These people have so little rights and the plaza owner was just taking control away from them. If I want to give someone a sandwich, or a water bottle, who are you to tell me I can’t gift something because I’m in a shopping center YOU own. I know, I know… this might seem crazy to some of you, but I was fired up about it. I stand firm in my belief that it’s ALWAYS right to love someone. I was loving people and got scolded, that really rubbed me the wrong way.

Oi, end rant! haha. The trip was eye-opening, to say the least, and I have a fire in my heart to serve others. Coming back was an adjustment, but I’m slowly easing back into life. I urge you, if you’ve never been on a mission trip to go on one. It is something I will never forget.

Also, I got to New York, which was one of my 30 before 30 goals! WHOO!!!

30 Before 30: Have a Job I Love

Having a job I love is so important to me. I can’t imagine living a life, day in and day out, spending most of my time in a job that I absolutely abhor. Most of my post-college career has been like that. In and out of jobs I disliked and hated, jobs where I was being mistreated or under-appreciated. My potential was not being utilized to it’s full ability and it made me complacent. I felt like I was going nowhere, I constantly felt the urge to turn around and run away from the careers that were suffocating me.

Until this job.

I have been technical writing for military systems, writing Operator’s Manuals, proofing, copy-editing, and overall just doing the supposed “grunt-work” of writing. AND IT HAS BEEN INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!

Not only do I love copy-editing and proofing, crossing our T’s and dotting our I’s, but I’m actually writing for my career. I’m being fully utilized and appreciated. My supervisors have let me know how invaluable I have become and how quickly I’ve caught on. I’m trusted and my thoughts on how the manuals are constructed are considered. Nobody undermines me and makes me feel like my job is lesser than theirs. I’m just as integral a part of the team as anyone else and I do not go unnoticed.

I really cannot say enough about loving my job. It’s really shed a new light on what life can be like when you feel respected at work as much as I am at home. I’m smitten with the job and I doubt I could ever go back to being misused in the workplace.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that words cannot express how blessed I feel to be 26 yrs old and to love my job.

DIY: Tie Dye Hair Pt 2

So this time I left the colors in for a bit longer and GLOBBED on the colors. The purple came out more purple and less dark blue and the turquoise is actually turquoise instead of light blue. I’m officially in love [and also a little bit of a my-little-pony] with this hair-do!

Original Colors here! I used the following dyes:
Manic Panic Cotton Candy

30 Before 30: Tie Dye Hair

12. Dye my hair a fun color [even if it’s just the tips].

I did it, guys! I tie dyed my hair!!!!! Aren’t you proud of me? I’ve always wanted to do something crazy and fun like this!! I got the okay from my boss and with Pitchfork [concert festival] this weekend, I had to change things up a bit!! =) I’m a wild child and I’m definitely loving this look. It’s laid back and not overly abrasive, LOVE.

30 Before 30: Hold a Newborn Babe

I am completing my 30 Before 30 list fast these days!

29. Hold a newborn babe.

Well, guess what?! I held my friends’ 5 day old baby boy Greyson Kelly! He is so absolutely perfect! I loved feeling his whole body stretches and supporting his teeny back with my arm! He also smelled like HEAVEN! Baby smell is so appealing! He napped in my arms for a bit! We really shared some Auntie Sarah baby Greyson time together. It was just what I needed! Mitch said it’s the happiest he’s ever seen me! =)
